Shilpa to bring Bollywood glamour to British parliment (gossip)

The British parliament, down in the dumps over a long-running expenses scandal, is set to brighten up to a touch of Indian glamour Wednesday when it hosts a wedding dinner in honour of Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty and her husband Raj Kundra.

The dinner at the House of Commons is to be hosted by Keith Vaz, Britain's longest serving MP of Indian origin, and is expected to be attended by prominent British MPs and ministers led by the Leader of the House of Commons and Equality Minister Harriet Harman.

Leading members of the Asian community and corporate leaders will also figure among an estimated 150 guests, said Vaz, who attended the wedding of Shilpa and London-based businessman Kundra in Mumbai November 2009.

"I am absolutely thrilled that we are able to celebrate the wedding of Shilpa and Raj in the House of Commons," he told Tuesday.

"The wedding ceremony in India was an absolutely beautiful occasion and I am so pleased to be able to bring some of the celebrations to the UK. Both Shilpa and Raj have done so much for charitable causes."

"Chefs at the House of Commons have created a special dessert called Shilpa's Delight," added Vaz, who first met Shilpa after she appeared in Celebrity Big Brother, a TV reality show, in 2007.

Wednesday's dinner is set to cheer a parliament that has been hit by a scandal over expense claims filed by British MPs, many of which have been criticised as a wastage of public money.

Members returned Tuesday after a much-needed Christmas break following months of media revelations over their expense claims, including one for clearing a moat around an MP's country estate.

"It's a dinner in honour of Shilpa and Raj, but I'm sure it will enormously cheer up all of us at the House of Commons because we associate Shilpa with India and glamour," said Vaz.

"It will cheer us up also because it's getting so cold here," said Vaz, as Britain prepared for Arctic weather conditions this week. Temperatures are set to dip to minus 10 in parts of Britain amid predictions of the coldest winter in 100 years.

Shilpa is an international patron of Silver Star, a charity founded by Vaz to raise diabetes awareness.

Genelia D'Souza is upset with rumours of her wedding with actor Riteish Deshmukh. The actress says she isn't getting married to anyone for the time being.

"My films and my brands are my priority as of now and I'd like to keep it that way. And if I do decide to settle down, you will hear it from me when as and when it happens," she added.

Genelia is right now looking forward to the release of "Chance Pe Dance". She is paired with Shahid Kapoor in the film, which is releasing Jan 15.

Anil Kapoor's American series premieres Jan 14

Mumbai, Jan 5: Anil Kapoor, who recently turned 50, has many a reason to be happy - his American television series "24" is set to premiere in New York Jan 14 and his presence in the series has been extended from 10 to 16 episodes.

"Initially, I was under contract for just 10 episodes. Then seeing the way my role developed, they decided to have me in 16 episodes. I must say I was as happy with the whole experience as I was with 'Slumdog Millionaire'," Anil told reporter confirming the news.

The versatile actor, who turned 50 Dec 24 last year, agrees 2009 has been a phenomenal year for him.

"And now 2010 starts for me with the premiere of my television series '24' on January 14. I'm flying down to New York on January 12 for the premiere. In fact, all through the shooting of the series I've been flying in and out of India and the US." he said.

"At one point, I thought I wouldn't be able to do Anees Bazmi's 'No Problem' because I was committed to do '24'. I even spoke to Mr. (Amitabh) Bachchan about my role. Finally, I did manage both, thanks to Anees' co-operation. But I must say doing '24' and 'No Problem' side by side was quite a cultural and continental shuffle," he said.

Anil plays a Middle Eastern character in "24".

"I'm now waiting to see how audiences react to it. I've always believed in doing all kinds of work. Just like my friend A.R. Rahman who scores music for Shankar and Mani Ratnam, I've also done 'Eeshwar' and 'Rakhwala' side by side. I think variety is a very strong incentive for growth," he said.

Anil recalls how a lot of people advised him against doing an American television series.

"But I was also advised not to do 'Slumdog Millionaire'. I took it up because my wife and kids were in favour. Can you imagine how I'd feel right now if I had turned it down? If I see 2009 as the best year of my life, it's partly because of 'Slumdog?'," said Anil.

"Then, of course, there was 'Aisha' my two daughters' gift to me. Yes, that's how I see it. It isn't my gift to them, but their gift to me. While Sonam plays the lead, Rhea is producing 'Aisha'. I'm proud of both of them."

He is now ready to take on his third international project.

"But I am very clear that I won't play Indian characters in international projects unless they're really special. I won't do the stereotypical Indian characters in American films. I've told my agent to seek out parts that are not culture-specific but have character."

Another project with Danny Boyle after "Slumdog Millionaire" is not ruled out. "Yes, Danny has gone on record to say we're working together and we will. At the moment I'm not signing anything new until I'm sure of what to do next."

Anil feels a strong support system at home and at work is the key to his successful journey as an actor.

"I hope my children have imbibed the values that I grew up with. I'm very proud of my three children. They are all doing well for themselves. My son Harshvardhan is enjoying his student days in the US, just like I did at his age, though not abriad like him."

Director Shankar, who has been tight-lipped so far about his action-packed sci-fi Tamil film "Endhiran" starring superstar Rajnikant and Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai, reveals that the movie is almost finished and has lots of surprises in store for the audience.

"'Endhiran' is almost complete. 90 percent of the shooting is over," Shankar wrote on his blog www.directorshankaronline.com.

"I have just finished the action sequences of the film 'Endhiran' in Pune and Lonawala. both the leading artists of the film were present during the shooting," he wrote.

Shankar has also uploaded some of the stills of the film on his blog. This is said to be the first official release of the stills of the movie.

A year ago some pictures taken surreptitiously during the shooting of a song in Peru in South America were released and Shankar had protested, saying it was a pirated work.

Shankar launched the blog Jan 1 in a bid to interact with his fans.

The other sections of the blog that will update fans about the progress on the film have not been activated yet.

"While (his last blockbuster) 'Sivaji' was about black money and corruption, 'Endhiran' is about an andro humanoid robot Prem. The first half of 'Endhiran' is full of surprises. The second half is a roller coaster ride," he wrote.

The director also promises to share information about the making of his magnum opus "Endhiran".

Being made on a budget of Rs.125 crore, the film has hogged the limelight since it was launched. Sun Pictures is producing it.

Shankar, whose "Sivaji" was released on June 15 in 2007, may screen "Endhiran" in April or June this year.

Delhi T-party turns damp squib?

New Delhi, Jan 5: As expected, the much-awaited T-party hosted by the Union Home Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, here today for eight political parties from Andhra Pradesh turned out to be a damp squib as a solution to break the Telangana deadlock remained elusive with the Centre again indulging in a tight rope walk.

In fact, the very statement of the Union Home Minister during his opening remarks at the all-party conclave that the meeting was intended to “deliberate on the mechanism and lay down the road map for consultations”, amply reveals that a settlement to the Telangana crisis might not be evolved in the near future. By all accounts, it is likely to be a long-drawn and time-consuming affair, leaders of various parties averred.

The all-party meeting, which has drawn country-wide attention, was held in the block housing the Home Ministry. Mr Chidambaram presided over the meeting which was attended by Mr K. Rosaiah in the capacity as Chief Minister.

Those who represented the eight political parties invited for the meeting are: Mr K. Sambasiva Rao and Mr Uttamkumar Reddy (Congress), Mr Revuri Prakash Reddy and Mr Yanamala Ramakrishnudu (TDP), Mr K. Chandrasekhara Rao and Prof. K. Jayashankar (TRS), Mr Chiranjeevi and Mr C. Ramachandriah ( PRP), Mr B. V. Raghavulu and Mr Julakanti Ranga Reddy (CPM), Dr K. Narayana and Mr Mallesh (CPI), Mr Bandaru Dattatraya and Mr Haribabu (BJP) and Mr Asaduddin Owaisi and Mr Akbarauddin Owaisi (AIMIM).

Despite biting cold, a large number of MPs, ministers, legislators and party workers descended on the national capital on Monday night. Even as the crucial meeting began at the Home Ministry office, scores of supporters holding placards raised slogans of “Jai Telangana” and “Jai Samaikya Andhra”. Some pro-Telangana supporters even staged a rally at the A.P. Bhavan.

The Union Home Minister, in his opening remarks, explained the events and circumstances that led to his convening the meeting. He pointed out that his first statement on December 9 was made only on the basis of the report on the outcome of the all-party meeting convened by the Chief Minister, Mr K. Rosaiah, two days earlier. However, after his announcement, some political parties had changed their stance leading to agitations in the non-Telangana regions. My first announcement was

even termed as “hasty” and based on misinformation, he pointed out. Mr Chidambaram further said that he was compelled to make another announcement on December 23 which triggered agitations and resignations in the Telangana region. Thereupon, an invitation was sent on December 30 to the eight political parties to the meeting for not only a wide range of consultations, but also to dispel certain misunderstandings.

The Union Minister reminded all the political parties that it was imperative to restore normalcy in the strife-torn state and ensure peaceful conditions for students to go back to schools and colleges to pursue their academic career. Normalcy alone will help the government to concentrate on taking up various developmental and welfare projects, he added.

Mr Chidambaram also reminded the political parties that disruptive forces were waiting for an opportunity to unleash chaos and terror in the state. Unless all the parties show accommodation and goodwill to find a solution collectively through consultations and discussions, these disruptive forces might raise their ugly heads and become active for their own sinister objectives, he reminded.

If one reads between the lines, the Union Home Minister’s reference to disruptive forces, it could be amply construed that he was implying about the Maoists’ hidden hand behind the violence and vandalism in the raging agitations in the region.

Also Mr Chidambaram seems to have made the balanced statement, without committing himself to any sort of assurance, after receiving a report from the acting Governor, Mr K. S. L. Narasimhan, and the Chief Minister, Mr K. Rosaiah, when they called on him last night. One cannot ignore the fact that Mr Narasimhan, a retired IPS officer, who worked as the Director of Intelligence Bureau, was specially chosen as the Governor with a special agenda to keep the Centre apprised of the political and law and order situation from time to time.

After the all-party meeting concluded, leaders of various political parties expressed their disappointment and issatisfaction over the deliberations. While the Congress leaders were happy that the process for laying the road map for Telangana has begun, the TRS, TDP, the BJP and PRP were all expressed their unhappiness. The PRP Chief Mr. Chiranjeevi said that this party has firmly espoused the demand for a unified state and opposed its bifurcation. The MIM felt that it was time for the Centre to impose President’s Rule.

As the contentious Telangana issue is likely to drag on for some more time in the name of “wider consultations and consensus among all parties”, the State has virtually become a simmering volcano.
